Okay, wow, this is real early to be getting a jump on this, but I've been thinking hard on this lately.

For Kumoricon this year, I'm cosplaying again. You just try and stop me. And, once again, I'm between two choices. One of which is going to involve some MAJOR work and challenge me greatly. The other's not that difficult, but requires a haircut and dye, or another wig, which it turns out I'm mildly allergic to.

Option #1:
[link] Tali'Zorah nar Rayya of Mass Effect. INCREDIBLY HARD. But incredibly awesome if I can pull it off. Plus, she has HIPS!

Option #2:
[link] and [link] for a closeup. Elk, the wavemaster from the .Hack// series. Not too hard at all. But then again, people would get me confused with Tsukasa. Hm.

So, watchers, we stand at a crossroads. What to do?

Also, should I pick Tali, does anyone have any suggestions for all the metal/plastic-y bits of her suit? Halp me.

Now I'm off to work on These Rough Beasts a little before I pass out. Toodles!

AF Reviews Stuff Late At Night!

I was watching YouTube videos for Thief: Deadly Shadows tonight in the absence of people to talk to.

Oh my god I love this game so much. I think this clip has some ambient dialogue in it, which is often times the best part of the game. This part has a guy dreaming about giant bats XD; The first game had a couple guys arguing about which side to bet on in a bear fight. Amazing.

One of the other great parts of this game are the Pagans. They're a faction worshiping trees and animals and all that nature jazz--like it sounds. But oh my dear Lord do they ever talk funny. A sample:

"Sings we to them Woodsie lord for he’s to be’s saving us from them horrors."

And they talk like that during the ENTIRE game. It cracks me up and I love them.

However... the one part of this game that I absolutely CANNOT stand.. is the level/job/heist entitled "The Shalebridge Cradle". Oh my sweet, gentle, Lord Jesus, I hate this part of the game so fragging much--in all the times I've played Thief over again, I have only played this level once. With all the lights on. In the middle of the day. With the Butterfly Song and Barenaked Ladies playing on the stereo and the game muted.

Garrett (the Thief) gives a better history of the place than I could--long story short, it's an old orphanage that was, at one point, an insane asylum as well. While it was full of happy little orphans... it caught fire, trapping people inside.

A video game magazine, I forget which one, even rated the Cradle as one of the top five most terrifying levels in the history of games. I don't disagree. The ambient noise and lighting... the level design... the plotline... makes me want to curl into a ball and watch My Little Pony. There's one part in the background noise that is a disembodied voice, talking to you. Upon examination, it's a voice clip played backwards and at a weird speed.

"You really are here in the past. [crash, breaking sound] They'll find you..."

You really feel like you're crawling through a burned out husk of an orphanage-turned-asylum. The first person perspective doesn't do anything to dispel this illusion either. Half the time, I'm crouched in the shadows, hugging the wall, clutching my dagger and praying to whatever God is listening to Garrett that the godawful thing crawling around in the room next to me gets bored and moves on.

And it's not just me. Garrett even begins to sound gradually more and more tense throughout the level, until he's not saying anything at all other than "Damn" or, "I've got... I've got to get out." Which, coming from the guy who got his eye torn out by a crazy tree-woman and faced down several guys trying to take over the world with nothing but a dagger and a couple broadhead arrows... is downright disturbing. Garrett gets concerned, yes. But at his core, he's a snarky, confident bastard who's out for him and him alone. To have a level where that confidence is shaken so badly really adds to the tension--and to the illusion that you are indeed in a dire situation, and there may not be a way out.

Then they take your weapons away.

And the monsters come out.

Not monsters like Resident Evil or other typical horror games--granted, there are creatures called "Puppets" which walk around on hypodermic stilts and make awful gasping asthma noises, but these really aren't that scary, as you can take them down with a fire or broadhead arrow. The monsters that make me nearly wet myself with sheer terror are the Staff. They're fairly simple. Just models of typical people from the game, only colored black without any discernible features. They move like guards, can hear you and see you just as easily as any guard, and, in theory, they don't sound all too scary.

But here's the catch.

You're weaponless, dressed in leather, and in their territory. When they come at you, you have no choice but to run, and often times, there is no place to go. They corner you, they fly at you, and it's game over. Not to mention the fact that they whisper and babble to themselves like normal guards complain about pay and beer. This is also the point at which the voice gets louder, more obvious, and repeats itself at more frequent intervals.

And it all culminates at the end of the level. In order to escape, Garrett must throw himself out of the tower window, theoretically killing himself in order to escape. Having played the game up to this point... seeing Garrett commit suicide is chilling.

...

Thankfully, after that level, we get to go back to harassing silly-talking Pagans for easy loot. Huzzah!
